Highland coffee country in Malawi with rows of bushes in morning mist

Malawi roots

Born in Malawi. Raised on coffee.

Three cafés, a bakery, a coffee brand, a supermarket presence and a coffee warehouse — built in Malawi over roughly ten years, before the family looked abroad.

At home

Three cafés before the question of abroad.

Maravi built three high-quality cafés and bakeries in Malawi, together with a supermarket presence that put its coffee in front of shoppers who had never thought of Malawian coffee as a brand.

That matters more than it sounds. Malawi drinks very little of its own coffee. Most of it leaves the country as green bean. A café that serves it at home, and a supermarket shelf that sells it, is a small act of national confidence.

It took about a decade to build those rooms: buildings found, stripped, rebuilt and staffed. Three of the projects — Millie’s Artisan in Blantyre, Maravi Bakery in Lilongwe and Maravi Gardens in the forest reserve — are documented with before-and-after photographs on the café portfolio page.

There is a warehouse as well. Buying coffee from smallholders and keeping it dry, clean and safe until it is roasted is the least glamorous and most decisive part of the business in Malawi: a wet bag of beans is a lost harvest for a farmer and a lost season for the roaster. The family built the storage before it built the brand.

The encouragement

Visitors asked the question first.

Visitors from Britain and America kept telling the family that Maravi should open where they lived. British franchising culture made the idea practical: a repeatable café format, a recognised brand, a system that could be taught.

In April 2021 the family decided to look abroad. Not because Malawi had failed — it had not — but because the concept had proved itself and the next question was whether it could travel.

The portfolio

The rooms, before and after.

The family’s design portfolio records the work in detail: the buildings as found — peeling render, broken ceilings, bare concrete — and the same rooms finished, furnished and full.

It also records the thinking behind them: local produce on the shelves, bread and coffee made in house, and a forest left standing where a bar once stood.

That portfolio is now on this site, with the family’s permission.
